Boston's subway system and trollies are run by the "Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority." The Boston subway opened in 1897 and is the oldest subway in the US. The first station was Park Street and is still the center of the system. All schedules and info regarding the subway can be obtained there. When riding the subway it's important to know there are four different lines, which include Blue, Green, Orange, and Red. Each of these lines run daily from 5am-1am. The subway system can become confusing to new travelers, but never fear, there are maps posted throughout. For the most part, the trains are safe except for the Orange line that might become unsafe during later hours.
